5 YouTube channels worth subscribing to as a web developer

Web development is a constantly evolving field, and as a web developer, it's important to stay up to date with the latest technologies and trends of the industry. YouTube is a great resource for learning new things and getting inspiration, and the same is true when it comes to the field of web development as well. But it can be difficult to know which channels to trust and weed out the irrelevant videos.

There are also a lot of channels out there that provide wrong or incomplete information. So, how do you filter out the bad ones?

You need to be following genuine channels managed by people who know what they are talking about and who are putting in the time and the research needed for a video and not just dumping content out there.

So let's dive in with my top five picks of genuine and useful content makers/channels on YouTube who I have been following for years and who have taught me a lot.

Kevin Powell --> CSS

If CSS is something you are interested in, I present to you the one and only Kevin Powell. You may hear a lot of people calling Kevin Powell the king of CSS and it doesn't take long to realize why people call him that if you look at his youtube channel. He literally begins most of his videos with the statement I am here to make you fall in love with CSS. His channel has something for beginners, intermediate and advanced developers alike. He talks about every new feature being introduced in CSS and it's just a delight watching him explain his code line by line as he writes it out. I have been following his channel for almost 2 years and I find myself going back to his content time and again as and when I am working on a project. His videos always come with chapters and timestamps helping you jump to the desired part. He also has a newsletter and a discord community that is always bustling with all things CSS.

James Q Quick --> Backend Development

Just the fact that the name is visible right on the landing page of this website should tell you enough about the credibility of the guy. I believe James Q Quick's youtube channel is highly underrated despite being a treasure trove of all things (mostly) backend. He talks about Javascript and its various frameworks, hosting, freelancing as a dev, various developer tools, and so much more. The list is never-ending. I remember the first time I stumbled upon his content through his video on a VSCode extension that worked wonderfully as an alternate for Postman. That helped me quite a bit, at least till I learned about using scripts in Postman. He regularly hosts talks with other known and established web developers on his channel which I find to be quite informative.

Steve Griffith --> JavaScript

With over 600 videos on his youtube channel, Steve has been writing and teaching JavaScript and other development languages for years now. His channel covers almost everything that you need to learn about JavaScript, ranging from basics to complex topics. He talks about the client side as well as the server-side development. Owing to the fact that Steve has been my professor, I can personally assure you that his content is legit and very useful. His videos cover the latest additions to Javascript, CSS, React.js and web development in general and sometimes he dives into the world of mobile development as well. His videos are thoroughly informative and he goes on (teaches) at a pace that doesn't overwhelm you.

Google Chrome Developers --> Design/ Dev/ Tech

If you are on the path to be a developer or already are one, you shouldn't be missing this channel. Coming straight from google and focused on the web, this channel talks about web development concepts, new tech coming to google chrome, tech conferences, events and so much more. This channel will help you stay abreast about how Chrome is evolving to incorporate more functionality and gives a lot to think about to you as a developer. I find the content they post really interesting because of the fact that a lot of their videos talk about issues with browsers and web technology and how are they at google approaching that. They also have playlists dedicated to design, Progressive web apps, speed and performance and loads more stuff.

Marques Brownlee --> All things tech

Now, this is not linked to web development directly but being in the tech industry, you need to be aware of what's going on in the tech world. Ours is an ever-evolving line and often technology crosses new milestones and devices start folding, bending, shrinking or growing. Be ready for all that with this channel that brings you everything happening in the tech industry. MKBHD talks about the latest tech covering various OS platforms. He also covers almost all major tech events worldwide and his videos are fun to watch overall. He is probably the only channel in this list that I followed long before I even thought about being a developer. A thing in particular that I like about his channel is that his reviews feel honest and genuine and he talks freely about things he dislikes.

So, what are you waiting for? Click subscribe and fill your feed with useful stuff that'll actually help you in your journey rather than waste your time with content that's no longer relevant. You need to be aware of what's happening in the industry as well as what is coming up in terms of new features in the languages that you write your code in and these channels will definitely help you with that.

There are still more channels like Traversy Media, Web Dev simplified, Net Ninjas and on and on the list goes with dozens more upcoming developers trying their best to share their skills with the world.
